Sounds like you probably can't just add another switch without adding more wire. What is a switch and how does it work?
1/ What a switch does is simply break a single hot wire allowing electricity to flow or not to flow.
2/ You have 3 wires in the box, 1 of which is green (ground). one of which is white. One of which is black.
3/ sounds like the white is the hot comming in (check to be sure and test with a tester that you can read volts).
4/The black and white wires probably connect to the existing switch and if thats the case than you only have one hot wire and no neutral wire. The power comes from the light fixture box on the ceiling, to the switch on one of the wires (white)and goes through the switch to the other wire (black) and back to the ceiling light and is attached to the black wire on the ceiling light. The neutral wire is in the light fixture box and is attached to the ceiling light. Some how you will need to bring the neutral wire to the wall switch to make this work.
good luck,
