Use a reciprocating saw to cut throught the whole mess (If you don't have one - you really need one.) You'll probably go through a few blades. It would probably help if you could remove the tile first. (A few whacks with a ten-pound hammer should do it.)
The fun part is dealing with the rough edge of the mesh that remains on the wall. If you have room, just bend it over the stud. Then, put up a new stud over the existing one - sandwich the mesh between the two studs.
