If you are talking about floors like Pergo..they are usually laid down on a sheet of foam but typically on top of a solid decked or concrete floor...so generally a Pergo type floating wood floor will not sound hollow underneath...
What thickness are the engineered wood floor pieces and how do they piece together....? have you searched google for info on how they are installed and what kind of subfloor is required?
