Cooking oil is not a problem. The main reason people have unrepairable clogs is towels and rags, but even those are generally cuttable with a power snake.

If they had to have the front yard dug up, there was probably a collapsed pipe or something. Generally with today's snake technology, clogs do not require digging up.
