If I'm reading your post correctly you want to put an outlet in your Garage using a light switch source. Well you must have #12 wire currently in the light switch source. Most lines running to lights only call for a #14 gauge wire. You may want to run some kind of power tools or even a vacuumm cleaner off the outlet. This calls for a #12 wire or you could overload the line thus a Fire hazzard condition will exist.Run a new Line of #12 wire from your Ckt Box..Your Insurance Co. will not cover any type of coverage with failing to follow the building code of your area.
Do yourself a favor and use the proper wire for the job for the safety of your family and home.Be Safe...and Happy Holidays...Joe
