I'm in the same boat but I found a great book to help me out. It is called "Your New House". I learned what to look for and how to tell if the foundation work was done correctly, how to tell if I had a good painter, how to check millions of things. I had the book 20 minutes and I immediately drove out to my house with the book in hand as I walked through and under it. I also was looking for signs that contractors were drinking while building. The books web site is yournewhousebook.com. Oh yea, when I got to the house the insulation had just been put in. I read the section in the book and noticed is said r19 was the standard for my area. I had r13 and checked my contract to find it said r19. I didn't make them tear it out but I did get a better heat pump when I pointed it out. The book paid for itself 100times over! Good luck!
