there is a texturing additive that you add to paint. It has a look of popcorn, but not that dense.

It is best put on with a heavy knap roller. This additive makes the paint very thick and reduces by 75% or so the coverage rate. Make sure this is your plan.

I would just float the wall and do your own texturing then prime then paint and you have a quality job done right.
