Neutral Question

Posted by TF on February 7th, 2001 04:45 PM

I have a relay that can be powered by 120 Vac, single
phase. The 120 Vac power originates from an outlet
about 600 feet from where the relay is located. The
"hot" line lead of the 120Vac is routed through
contacts from other equipment. Once the hot lead arrives
at the relay, it is 600 ft away as described above.
NOTE: The neutral at the circuit is not routed to the

Another 120 Vac circuit (600 ft away) is routed to the
relay. Only the neutral from this circuit (no the hot lead)
is routed to the relay.

I know this is a problem but do you know the safety
consequences and is identified in the National Electric

SUMMARY of my question:

The line lead of one 120 Vac system is tied to the relay.
The neutral lead of a separate 120 Vac system is tied to the
same relay. In other words, the line and neutral lead
does not come from the same 120 Vac system.
