If your furnace has a drain for condensate from the air conditioner, humidifier, and/or combustion chamber, see if that drain line is connected directly into a sewage drain. If it is, it could be acting like a vent for sewer gas that you then smell at your furnace. If you've got a strong stomach, smell the top of the opening of the drain at the furnace. A condensate pump or a trap in the line could solve your problem.
