either pressure treated wood or cedar. cost comparison of material cost may show that pressure treated is least costly. and I think pressure treated will last longer. as for what to look for in a contractor. good references check with references they give you on satisfaction with quality of work, cost compared to other bids, cleanliness of workers, courtesy of workers, if they are insured, are they trusting to work at your house with out your oversight against theft,etc. Then go see the prior jobs to check the quality of work with your own eyes. good luck LJ
