As someone else suggested, re-read the installation instructions. The set-up you're describing is how I've done mine. THEN, read the Recording Instructions.
I think you need to put your VCR to Chanel 04. (At least on my VCR, that's what I have to do.) If not, maybe Channel 03 or even 02.
Also, some VCRs have an Input Setting. For example, if I plug my Camcorder into the back of the VCR to 'play' what I videoed, I need to 'tell' the VCR that the INPUT is coming from an Auxiliary (or another) 'place'. (IE., a Camcorder) Make sure your VCR's Input Setting is on 'Normal', whatever that may be. Again, check the Manual.
