Well, for starters, I can't help you directly. But, I will say that messing with tension springs can cost you a limb. I've heard stories and, personally, wouldn't recommend how to do it, especially over the WEB.
You may not like my 'answer' but I advise you have someone who knows what they're doing make the adjustment. I don't even try to mess with the springs on my pull-down attic stairs. (When the time comes, I'm just going to replace them instead of trying to 'bend' back the tension bar on them.) The bar MAY end up breaking when my wife or I are walking up them, thus, possibly doing bodily harm.
I know it sounds discourging but in this case, I'd say that calling in a pro is money well spent. My best to ya and hope this helps.
