Glenn, this is one of the toughest. Most of the things that will easily remove the glue will also remove the finish. I have to go with Wick's WD-40 first. Spray it on a rag and the friction will help. Some people will tell you that it has silicons that will give you problems with fisheye but I painted a piece of wood that had been soaked in WD-40 and could not get it to fisheye. Goof Off would be my next choice but use it carefully as it will remove the finish.
I have had good success with paint thinner when I was not concerned about the finish but I would be very concerned on a nice finish.
