if the red wire has no insulation stripped from it...probably best to leave it alone. I suspect it may be a second HOT wire ...sometimes in old houses they would run three wire with or without a bare ground wire for convenience. if the red wire was bare and you had a volt ohm meter you could verify whether the red wire was hot as well by measuring AC voltage across it and the white wire --if hot it should read 110 to 120 VAC. probably best to leave it alone though--but if you wanted to cure your curiosity check it....but be careful cause it is probably on a separate circuit breaker and may still be hot when you are working with the other hopefully NOT Hot wires.
