I am more and more going for free standing decks, and not because the houses are moving, but to avoid water damage to the side of the house. It is only a few extra posts.

And except for decks over 4' or more tall, I am beginning to go for not burying the posts. I keep running into too many that are rotted through at ground level at the concrete. Occasionally you see some ground heave too. Mainly the decks are so heavy that with some cross bracing of the posts, they don't move when sitting on concrete pillars (either poured, premade pillars, or just a flat block).
