Musty smell from a flooded basement

Posted by Debbie on December 7th, 2001 06:58 PM

I'm new to this board and hope someone can help....

We recently had our sump pump stop working overnight resulting in about a 1/2 inch of water all over our finished basement. We have taken what rugs we could outside to let them dry and picked up the big rugs in our rec room so that they could drain as much as possible. They have now been laid out again to finish drying since they are simply too heavy to get upstairs. We have also taken as many of the items that ended up wet out of the basement (boxes, books etc) as possible.

The problem now is a persistent musty smell in the house. We plan on purchasing a dehumidifier in the next few days to help get rid of any excess moisture left in the basement but I was wondering if there is anything else we can do to reduce the odour?

Thanks for your help.
