Hi, Carole. Here are 3 things that will help:
1. Get a dehumidifier.
2. Put several open boxes of baking soda around. Our local hardware had a national brand on sale for $.50 a box and all you had to do was remove the outer wrapper to start it working.
3. If you see any obvious sign of water that has gotten on wood, apply a coat of thinned shellac or Zinnser's B-I-N to the wood. You thin clear shellac with denatured alcohol to about 75% alcohol. B-I-N is shellac with a white pigment.

These measures should get you on the right track but you might also check down the board for the many comments about how to get outside water (rain, snow melt, etc)away from your foundation. That is really the most important thing for keeping the smell away.
