In reply to Humming from Waste Pipes by Chuck Anderson on May 2nd, 2000 05:48 PM [Go to top of thread]

Chuck, as Jay J pointed out lengthening/shortening the pipe may help, although I'd
imagine that this will only result in a different pitched humming. While I'm no plumber
either, one thought comes to mind that may be worth a try which is to diffuse the air
coming into the pipe with some sort of muzzle (like on a machine gun). Here's what I'd
try for an experiment, get a piece of PVC that will fit around the vent pipe, drill
several holes on all sides of the PVC (hence the muzzle) and place at the top of the
vent. In theory (it's my theory and I'm sticking with it gangbreakup the air and muzzle the sound. Anyway, it's worth trying out and it'll only cost
a few bucks for the section of PVC. If it works and people ask what that thing is on
top of the house, just tell them that it's your anti-aircraft gun to protect the farm.
