moving weight bearing wall

Posted by anthony foti on April 5th, 1998 09:17 AM

27 yr old 2 storey home with full basement. Desire 2 move 13 wide dining room wall that has standard 6' pass through to living room. Room 2 B extended 3' and wish to have minimal drop below ceiling height with replacement beam. Understand how to build temporary support walls.
1. what type of beam should I use?
2. can replacement beam replace existing 2 x 4 double header? If so, can exisiting framing simply rest on replacement beam or does it need to be secured?
3. Can beam span full 13'?

PS. wall has 8 x 6 "I" beam directly below in basement. Hope this is enuff info. Thanx Anthony
