a combination of paper products or styrofoam and water. Like paper mache.

What you need is a water atomizer, like a used windex bottle and a wide bladed scraper.

Saturate, the accoustical stuff thoroughly with water, then just scrape off the stuff. The more penetrated with water the easier the removal and CLEANUP.

The bulk of the task is the clean up of the stuff that has fallen to the floor.
