They have electronic automatic shut off valves that can be used in place of a pan. If a leak occurs or if your power is shut off the gizmo will shut off the supply of water. Some insurance companies will offer a credit if one is installed.

A pan however can always be used in tandom with this device to offer complete protection from a water leak.
