Mildew in Basement

We live in an 85 yr old house that has a full basement running the entire length of the house. The wall that is underground, of course, absorbs water when we have rain. Therefore, we have mold and mildew growing on the damp wall.

Also, the space under the front porch is the only part of the basement that is not concrete. There are vents on each end of the porch for cross ventilation but the smell is awful. We have fans running constantly in the basement but nothing seems to help.

We live in Birmingham, AL and have high humidiy.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
