Guy, there is an easy solution but you probably don't want to hear it now. For the crown molding, get some 2 x 2 and rip it to the angle of the crown molding to the wall. (A lot of it is 45 degrees but be sure to check.) Then screw the ripped 2 x2 to the wall/ceiling angle. Then nail the molding to this. Chair rail is done the same way but use 3/4" (or thinner if you can plane it or have it done). Have fun and good luck.
