as a tilesetter i have installed both materials as a hearth. you will first need to install an underlayment for the tile to be set on. I reccomend durock cement board. screw or nail it every 4 inches around the perimeter and at least every six inches in the "field". use a thin set mortar or mastic to set tile ( check with your supplier and make sure your setting material is ok for the stone you purchase. One note: the granite will not scratch as easy as some marbles, and you will need a wet saw to cut either.
