maple beech or poplar

Maple and beech can be stained and the grain will resemble cherry. Since you work with poplar, I would suggest you use that with a fruitwood stain. Try a small piece first. I did a whole house trim and doors in poplar / fruitwood stain / sanding sealer / laquer. As you know, cherry stains do not resemble the wonderful glow of natural cherry.
