Making a skinny header

Hi Clayton:
It sounds like the 6" you have comes from removing the double top and double bottom 2X6 plates....yes? You will have to have something over the concrete wall, so you will have to leave one of the 2X6's at the base. This gives you 4.5" for a header. What I think I would do is rip down 3 2X6's to 4.5" wide, then sandwitch 1/2 plywood between each ripped 2X6, adhering then with PL-200 construction adhesive and lots of 1 5/8" wood screws (from the outside to the middle piece), let dry and use that for your header.
