If your installing 1/4" Luan it makes very little difference wich direction you lay the panels, just make sure your seams don't fall on the seams below. Leave some expansion at the walls so the panels can move. Don't but the panels too tight just till they touch or even a little less(don't leave a gap though). Belt sand all seams till there 100% flat and level. Fill any areas that need it. Make sure your luan it "exterior grade" and approved for vinyl installation.
Nail or staple on a 4 to 5 inch grid. If you nail fill all nail divits.
Remember your vinyl will only look as good as the underlayment.....
