1. check out this site showing a picture of a radiator cover ..and yes looks like it is advisable to use like a 1x4 across the back for bracing

2. styrofoam looking trim may not be as durable as wood but if it has no unsightly dings or divots and looks good leave it on....

3.I believe these type thermostats with digital displays require the batteries to power the display and those are sometimes/if not always mounted on the units subbase on the wall then the housing with the display, etc snaps onto the subbase before the display should be activated. Are your two units identical brands? and are they both working fine?
