Locating and fixing cause of musty smells in walls

Posted by Don in VA on August 6th, 2001 06:41 PM

Here's the history:

House is two years old. During a typhoon-like storm, we found that some of the windows were not installed correctly. Water poured in under the windows, including inside the wall.

Presumably, the builder fixed these problems. We've seen no more water. However, every so often, especially on windy days or after a good rain, the rooms that had the leaky windows smell musty. The musty smell is concentrated near where the windows leaked. However, when I try to pinpoint the exact location of the smell, I can't.

What's the best way to find the cause? I don't want to rip out entire walls. How can I be sure water still isn't leaking in (it can suddenly become musty even if it hasn't rained in a week)?

What kind of expert should I be looking for to help me out?
