It depends on the type of model you're planning on buying. An upright, frost free model looks to use quite a bit more energy.

From a quick comparison I did from information posted at Frigidaire's web site.

20 cu.ft chest freezer uses 490 kWh/year
20 cu.ft upright freezer uses 763 kWh/year
EnergyStar 20 cu.ft. Top-freezer fridge 458 kWh/year
Regular 20 cu.ft. Top-freezer fridge 509 kWh/year
23 cu.ft. Side by side 686 kWh/year

Of course if you then only needed a small freezer instead of a full size fridge, there should be some savings there. And that doesn't take into account the savings of a new freezer over an older fridge, which would almost certainly be better energy wise.
