Of using the lag bolts. But you may not be able to find lag bolts long enough to get good engagement into the 12 inch depth of the mantel, so you may want to use 1/2 inch threaded rod cut to the proper length. Thread the rod into the studs by drilling 15/32 holes first, and then using two 1/2 inch nuts on the rod jamed together to thread the rod into the studs. Remove the nuts after the rods are in place. Then drill 1/2 inch matching holes in the mantel, (matching the hole locations will be critical) and drive the mantel onto the rods. The threads on the rods will keep the mantel on tight.
