I just finished a larger area in my bathroom where I skimmed the entire ceiling with a light layer of mud. It just plain works better for me doing it for this way.

My problem has been that I sand and then primered to find I sanded to much and have a depression, and I have not sanded enough and gotten a bump that was very visible after priming. I am getting better at tape seams. I found I was doing three to four applications to get a nice smooth transition. By skimming the whole area, I applied the tape in one step and then skimmed the entire area in the next step. After a light wet sanding, it was very flat.

I was worred about adherance issues and the extra weight, neither of which sound like they will be an issue.
