Dawn, the wires for the light fixture should have been labeled under the fan location for the light. My ceiling fan actually has a black and white wire to hook the light fixture wires too...but I believe they were labeled for the fan as well. The white wire from the light fixture should connect to a white wire under the fan, the black wire should connect to a black....
The white wire from the light fixture usually connects to the neutral (usually white wire) and the black wire usually connects to a constant power wire (usually black)....

The blue wire you refer to is usually a second power wire at the top of the fan that is connected with the black wire on the top of the fan to supply the same 110 volts to both the fan and the light circuits!! Please supply more info. like is this a new fan and light fixture you are installing or was the fan already there and you are trying to add a light fixture?? What brand is the fan and have you contacted the manufacturer or searched the WEB to find more wiring details for your make and model to assist in wiring a light fixture to.??????Post back up with more info. so we can be of better help!!
