I just finished off my basement walls for a family room and now ready to finish off the final step, the floor before painting. I am a first timer when it comes to working with a concrete slab, I am seeking any advise on the best way to tackle this project.

The project:
I have a 300 sq feet concrete slab which has high and low spots of up to 1/4 inch and has a gradual grading of up to 1 inch. I am preping to install 12X12 tiles on a diagonal layout.

Whats the best way to level the slab??? Can I use just general concret mix or use the self leveling mortar mix or some other types of mix for such a large area.
Where should I start from, the low end and work my way towards the high or can I start in the middle of the diagonal grid?

Any info is much appreciated.
