In reply to Roof leak - how to handle water until it can be repaired? by Sue on January 30th, 2001 11:43 AM [Go to top of thread]

First, contact the insurance company and file a claim for the roof damage. Your adjuster will have some contractors to handle everything and may get your roof fixed sooner so they don't have to pay for too much interior damage. You need to fix the leak ASAP.

The leaking roof will run over parts of the ceiling and ruin it anyway so the best thing is to remove the ceiling closest to the leak to confine the damage to a smaller area. Same for any wall cavities. Once you can confine the leaks to specified locations then use the old fashioned way and put buckets under the leaks. Ok it all with the adjuster first and get some pictures for him so he can see the extent of the damage before you do anything. What you would be doing is emergency repairs to stop the water so pictures beforehand will help.
