Hi, Kay. A big part of the answer depends on what state that you are in. The laws vary so much that it is impossible to say anything meaningful.

You might search this board as there has been a lot of info posted already. From the Message Board page, hit ctrl+f. A window will appear and you type a key word like lead in and read and click through every post that has the key word in the title. Hopefully, you are in a state where you can strip the paint yourself or perhaps you can check to see if the government can help out with the removal cost but this might be available only in the big cities with a lot of old houses.

Stripping with a product like Peel Away or Citristrip will still be expensive but not nearly as much as having to have the guys in the white suits come out.
