Laundry on first floor?

Posted by Dave on August 7th, 2000 08:11 AM

I'm thinking of putting my washer and dryer on the first floor, instead of the basement. My main question is about drainage... The main stack is about 8 feet away, so the waste would have to run an 8 foot horizontal (more or less) span. Is that OK? Also, I would like the washer's waste pipe to fit onto the waste pipe in a way so that if it backs up, it does so in the basement, not on the first floor. Can I make an airtight/water tight connection from the washer to the drain? And I'm not sure how to vent the waste pipe....

Anyone have any knowledge on the plumbing on above grade laundry? How is it normally done?
