I would take up the old carpet first. With laminate you want a clean, hard surface to adhear it to. If you don't take up the carpet now, you will wish you had in the not to distant future. The good news is that getting the old carpet up should be pretty easy. If it's down with tack strip it will come right up. If it's glued down, take a trip down to your local industrial rental out fit. They should ahve several tools that will get the carpet up. My tool of choice would be either a pneumatic spud bar like this or a walk behind floor scraper like this Sometimes, you can rent the walk behind floor scrapers from Home Depot. Good luck
