The time to call an expert is when YOU feel that you
are unable to do a task. Most repairs are well within
any persons ability if she really wants to do it.
As for books, there are many repair books on the
market for all DIY's and you can spend a small fortune
on them. The Time-Life books, although thorough, are
much too expensive. Some people on this site have
recommended the book at Home Depot. I know it is orange
and white and very thick (I do not know the name).

I would first check the local libraries, especially at
local universities. They tend to have a wealth of
information on construction techniques which would
give you an excellent background. You also have
knowledgeable people at this site to gladly help you
