knocking down a wall

Dear Nancy:

Is the wall you want to remove running parallel or perpendicular to the floor joist?
If it is running perpendicular to the floor joist it is a weight baring wall, you can remove this type of wall but you'll have to install a properly sized "header" to replace the wall you have just removed.
