Kelly, in addition to Carols suggestions you might want to stop by a local Air Conditioning Supply house and pick up a product called Kleen-Air. It comes in a bottle or a container like car paste wax. I like the can the best. You stick it in your return air duct and it eliminates the odors. Assuming you have central air. If not, they can just be sat around in various places. Also you might want to wash the walls instead of painting them. Have the evaporator coils on the A/C removed and cleaned. Duct cleaning would also help. I doubt that you'll have to go that far. Airing out will also help. Good luck.
