kitchen countertops

How common is it for professionals to use glue rather than screws or nails to install kitchen countertops?

I recently hired a contractor to install new countertops, and he used glue to hold it in place. Two weeks later I tried to replace my dishwasher, but couldn't pull the old dishwasher out because the counter is glued down. Two layers of vinyl flooring are in front of the dishwasher, so it can't just be slid out.

So my question is, was the contractor acting irresponsibly by using glue and thereby shutting in my dishwasher - or is this the common practice these days? He won't admit that he did anything wrong - I am trying to decide whether to file suit or not.

Any thoughts?
