One addendum to Jeff's suggestion is to make sure that your linoleum has no asbestos backing. You didn't mention how old the floor is, but linoleum quite often (through the 50's and perhaps a bit later) had asbestos backing and sanding through that is the LAST thing you would want to do. If the linoleum is fairly modern, you won't have to worry about the issue, but if it is as old as the 50's, you might want to scrape up a chunk and send it to a lab for testing (doesn't cost that much). If it does turn out to have asbestos, there are other ways of removal (even that a do-it-yourselfer can do) for flooring. Again, just don't sand it if it is indeed asbestos...
