Lots-0-conflicting info here because we just don't have enough info.........

Trusses are the engineered sticks for modern homes......they contain 'just' enough tested material to do the intended job........Don't be cutting these without consulting an engineer.......

Traditional stick built homes with rafters and floor joists enjoy the benefit of additional material and support............

So Chris .....If you have Joists per your first post.....
KP got it right......with the correct replacement framing the attic access is no problem.........
