One method (though not 100% complete) is to check the direction of the floor joists in the basement. If the wall runs parallel to the floor joists, it is NOT a bearing wall. If it runs perpendicular, it could be.

If it's perprndicular to the floor joists and there is no other wall running that direction within 8-10 feet of it, chances are it IS load bearing. If there is another wall nearby, maybe IT's the bearing wall.

That's a place to start ...
