I had a premium quality Sears high efficiency that was about 17 years old. I just replaced with a Janitrol Dependable 92 High Efficiency strictly because of the price (it cost me about $1,100 with installation). It costs abouth 1/2 the price of comparable models from the major brands. (The Sears needed a $900 part so it wasn't worth fixing.)
I checked around and contractors that install Janitrol love it. They said they can get me other brands but Janitrol, in their experience, was just as good. A contractor I've known for 20+ years even told me he has two (2) in his house and has never had trouble.
My take on it was this. If a Trane will last you 20 years (17, judging from my premium Sears model) and it costs twice as much, are you really losing anything by getting a Janitrol--even if it only lasts you 10 years?
