It Depends ...

(Another depends ...)

There are a lot of factors that come into play.

-Your siding should 'fit in' with the neighborhood. If everyone has vinyl, it would be a good idea to stay away from shake siding (for example.) Lap siding, on the otherhand, that isn't vinyl but LOOKS very much like the rest of the neighborhood would be fine (IMO).
-Vinyl is a maintenance-free siding. Shake is not.
-I do like the look of wood siding but you have to 'maintain' it.
-Style is another thought. You might not like the look of one material but do like the look of another.
-Then, once you pick a siding, can you afford it? (Consider the cost of siding AFTER you evaluate it's +'s and -'s. Sometimes the cost is justified by the aforementioned ...)

You have to play the +'s and -'s against each other and see how it comes out. When you eventually pick a siding, you can ask us a more specific question. (This one is very general. It's like asking, "What do you like for breakfast?" Me?! Sometimes cold pizza, or bacon, or cereal. You see, it just depends ...)

My best to ya and hope this helps.
