your contractor may be telling you it can't be done simply since you presumably have no good access to the space above the kitchen ceiling and the wall top plates for the wall you want the new gas line to drop down from to a shutoff valve. The licensed plumber may be able to suggest other options for re-routing the gas service to the new location in your kitchen. just my two cents. others will have more opinions ,,,I am sure. done by a licensed plumber will ensure it is done safely and according to building codes. Post back with what you find out from a plumber. LJ
