Hello Tracey, I've wired many fans
within walls and ceilings. First find which
direction the ceiling joists are running. Ideally
want to run your wire parallel along one. Then,
also ideally, locate your switch so that it is
between the same wall studs as an ac outlet (to
pull power from)which will be in line with the
ceiling wire you will run. Now, come directly up
above the switch area to where the wall & ceiling
meet. Cut 3x5 in. or so out of both the wall
board & the ceiling. You should then see a pair of
2x4's (depending on construction)that you will
have to notch out to run your wire through. You
will have a total of 4 new holes. One in the
ceiling for your fan, 2 where the wall and ceiling
meet, another directly below those for the switch.
You should, barring any surprises, be able to
slide a fish tape through and pull your new wire
from the outlet to the fan hole. Hope this helps.

Good Luck Carl
