Insulation problem in a remodeler home

Posted by Jeff V-shak on September 23rd, 2000 06:12 PM

I have a 1940's vintage 2-story home about 1200 sq. ft. I recently purchased the home and upon redoing the roof noticed that there are no roof vents nor any end vents for crossflow. Upon looking closer the sofit underside is a solid 1X6 that seals the vents up. Is there any alternative to major remodeling to circumvent moisture problems. I have an R-6 maybe 7 ceiling insulation value. And I have to rewire the attic before winter comes! Will a simple pair of end vents be my answer? There is no moisture barrier between the drywalled ceiling and attic either. Can I rely on the thick paint to act as a vapor barrier? Or should I put some 6 mil plastic down before reinsulating with R-25?
